Maccène LAURENT was born on January 27, 1943, in Source Bretoux, a village
located at the foot of the Marbial Valley, a few kilometers from the town of
Jacmel, in Haiti. This little corner of the world could have existed in obscurity,
except that it produced four of the most famous painters of Haitian art: Castera
Basile, Wilmino Domond, Célestin Faustin and Fritzner Lamour.

He started
painting in 1972 in the neighborhood of Célestin Faustin, under the direction of his
cousin Hugues Domond, a former student of his cousin Wilmino, who taught him a
particular way of painting. In his paintings, he evokes a vision where the Haitian
countryside was fertile… His works are known in North America and Europe,
particularly in France.
