Rader was born in Chernivtsi, Bukovina, which was part of pre-World War II Austria, a place considered a Jewish center at the time. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague for three years. In 1935 Rader exhibited his first solo exhibition in Prague, two years later he moved to Paris where he worked and exhibited his sculptures with Aristide Mayol. Rader’s works were heavily influenced by Jewish folklore, the Bible and Greek mythology. With his wife to Spain with the help of his friend Aristide Mayul, from there he moved to Cuba, where his style of work influenced many artists of the period
In 1943 Rader moved to the United States, where he lived in New York, Rader exhibited his works regularly at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Philadelphia Museum. In 1954 Rader traveled to Italy to sculpt in Rome and Florence, after about two years Rader exhibited his sculptures there at the Museum of Modern Art, Rader’s exhibition was highly regarded and acclaimed by renowned art scholar John Rewald. After returning to the United States, Rader held a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum, the largest solo exhibition held at the museum since its inception
Rader’s rarest works are his works from the 1930s. Arriving in Paris, the Nazis destroyed Rader’s studio for all his work. In 1967, Haim Gamzo (then director of the Tel Aviv Museum) held an exhibition of Rader’s works at the Helena Rubinstein House during a series of various sculpture exhibitions that also featured sculptures by French artist Auguste Rodin and British artist Henry Moore. The IDC Herzliya displays part of the artist’s estate. Rader’s sculptures are currently on display in important museums of modern art around the world, including in Paris, New York, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and more. Rader died in 1963 in New York
His sculpture “A Woman with a Ball and a Pyramid” (1959) was placed in Tel Aviv, in the Wiener Garden, a donation from the collection of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art
Reder is quoted as having said: We were born already drunk with fantasy
in 1942 Brenard Reder was living in Havana, Cuba, where Reder influenced many artists, before he arrived to New York City in 1943
